JONATHAN BLACK, PhD, FBSE, is Hunter Professor Emeritus of Bioengineering, Clemson University. He is an internationally recognized researcher and scholar in the fields of Orthopaedic Engineering and Biomaterials, and author of numerous articles, textbooks and monographs. Prof. Black is also a ULC lay minister and preaches in UU congregations in northeastern U.S., as well as teaching bioethics, Unitarian Universalist history, and related topics to adults in a variety of settings. He has long opposed coercion, especially in education, and, in the spirit of Holt and Gatto, is a strong supporter of de-schooling. He and his wife live in southeast Pennsylvania.

SAMUEL L. BLUMENFELD has spent the last 25 years writing about American education. A graduate from The City College of New York in 1950 and he worked for ten years in the book publishing industry. His articles have appeared in many publications, and he has lectured and held seminars in all fifty states and Canada, England, Australia, and New Zealand. Mr. Blumenfeld has also tutored and taught in private schools and as a substitute in public schools. He is, no doubt, one of the world's leading authorities on the teaching of reading. In 1986 he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree by Bob Jones University. His books include Is Public Education Necessary? and his best-selling expose of the National Educational Association, N.E.A. Trojan Horse in American Education. How to Tutor and Alpha-Phonics are used by thousands of parents and homeschoolers to teach their children the 3R's in the traditional manner.
