Speaker Biographies

Beverly Eakman

Beverly Eakman
BEVERLY EAKMAN is the Executive Director and co-founder of the National Education Consortium, as well as a speech writer, a columnist, a published author and an editor. She is a veteran of over 650 national radio/TV talk shows and 150 speaking engagements since 1991 with numerous published articles on education and privacy/computer issues in national magazines.

Beverly taught for nine years at the junior high and high school level. She authored the Anti-Coercion Education Bill which passed in three state legislatures in 2003. In February of 2000, she was an expert witness in a winning court case involving an education complaint, and in 1998 she was an expert consultant for an ABC news show "20/20" segment on self-esteem.

Beverly has been married for 36 years to David Eakman, an aerospace engineer/scientist.


DR. KAREN EFFREM, received her medical degree from Johns Hopkins University, with pediatric training from the University of Minnesota. She has researched children's health, political, and educational issues for nine years and has authored research papers on these topics for the Center of the American Experiment and for the Minnesota Family Council.

Dr. Effrem has been involved in the drafting of and testifying for legislation related to removing Minnesota from the Goals 2000 and School to Work system, for medical and academic data privacy, and against invasive early childhood legislation. She has spoken at numerous state and national conferences.

Karen Effrem and her husband, Paul, have three children and live in the Minneapolis metro area.
